This semester I enjoyed bloging about Greek Life for my Online Journalism class and hope that you all want to now go out and get involved, but I will no longer continue to update my blog. My greatest hits to check out are: My Story, My Experience (my final post about Greek Life), Interactive Greek Time Line, Meet The Greeks, and Congrats Spring 09. I enjoyed writing this blog and it was something new to experience that I’ve never done before. It was unusual and not my type of writing normally but it was important to learn how to write for a blog. Hope you all enjoyed and learned something!

When many people are approached about joining Greek Life they become hesitant and say they don’t know if the experience is for them and I can tell you that I was one of those people. Last Spring, I was a freshman enjoying my first year at Rowan University when I saw flyers for Girls Night Out, the kick off to sorority recruitment where all of the organizations introduce themselves in a common setting, like the Student Center Pit. My friends didn’t want to go but for some reason I felt compelled to check it out, it was my first year of college and everything deserves a try. So, I went out and met some of the girls from different organizations, day by day it became clear to me how the girls of Alpha Epsilon Phi were just like me and I knew I wanted to be a part of them. Preference came around, the last day of recruitment, you’re formally dressed and if there’s 12 rushes in the room, they’re picking 10 so it’s nerve wracking because you know you just want to be here so badly. You go home and wait for the phone call that night, and let me tell you that those 8 hours are horrible, you’re just hoping you got the bid to where you wanted to be. We met back in the Pit and our Rho Gammas (girls from organizations, but you don’t know which) hand us our envelopes and we open them and become overjoyed. The girls from each organization are outside singing waiting for you with balloons, flowers, and smiles!

My bid night was the night that changed my life. Not only did this start my journey through Alpha Epsilon Phi, it introduced me to my pledge sisters, who I can honestly say are my best friends and now I couldn’t imagine where I would be this year, this time if I didn’t make the choice to Go Greek.

Now, you get to the point where everyone is nervous about… pledging. Now obviously I cannot reveal over a public blog the ins and outs of pledging a sorority but I can tell you that it’s not a walk in the park. It’s like playing a sport in college, it’s a time commitment for six weeks, but after that the greatest thing happens because then you’re a sister and its only time to celebrate and have fun. My college experience has definitely been affected in a positive way due to being in a sorority. Mixers, intramural, homecoming, greek week, formal, parties, service projects, fundraisers, let’s just say you’re never bored, which seems to be becoming more prevalent on Rowan’s campus. Not only to mention I’ve made so many friends not only in Aephi but also found the best guy friends in different fraternities.

I’m not gonna b-s you either, sometimes you’re too busy, and you wish you could just be relaxing instead of cleaning up from an event or waking up early to do a service project, but when you’re Greek, you learn discipline and how to put others first that are in more need of things then yourself. It’s like a new community that you come into of friends, and many are afraid they’ll lose their old friends that didn’t choose to pledge. That’s only if you want to. If you choose to not hang out with your old friends, then you won’t, but if you choose to then you will. It’s all up to you how much you want to be involved.

My goal this semester was to prove to you all how going Greek enhances your college experience and if I changed only one mind and someone reading chooses to go out and go Greek, then my job is done.  So – enjoy your summer and GO GREEK!

Many of the Greek Organizations have special ways of saying goodbye to their seniors, it’s a sad time losing the oldest people in your fraternity or sorority. You all have taught us so much and good luck in the real world! Hope you’ve had the time of your life!

There will be a fundraiser for Order of Omega, an academic society for members of Greek Life, at Samauri from 12-3. Go out, enjoy some sushi and say you’re there to support Order of Omega.

During April 19th -26th all the Greek organizations participated in Greek Week, a little over a  week of events where a sorority and fraternity are paired together to compete in different competitions to see who will win the title of Greek Week champions for this year. In third place was Alpha Chi Rho and Alpha Sigma Alpha, in second was Alpha Epsilon Phi and Sigma Pi and the winners were Delta Chi and Delta Phi Epsilon and Tau Kappa Epsilon and Theta Phi Alpha; this year unlike any other a tie occurred and two teams share the title of Greek Week Champs! Congrats everyone!

Have you ever wished that you could do Prom all over again? Well if you get involved in Greek Life, you can! In the Spring semester each organization rents out a hall, has bar access, and finds a hotel to stay over in after. The girls dress up in prom/homecoming style dresses and the guys are dressed in suits and ties. Bring a date, it’s not too expensive and have a great time. Formals are just another great aspect that Greek Life has. Everyone receives an award of a Most Likely To… and many memories are made. I wish everyone a great time at the formals they attend and there will be pictures to come!

The big event will occur next week and many organizations across Rowan’s campus will be involved. The Big Event is a huge service project to clean up Glassboro! Over 100 Rowan University students will arm themselves with rakes, paint brushes, trash bags and other supplies on Saturday, April 25, as they head into the homes of Glassboro residents to perform service projects as part of the Student Government Association’s (SGA) Big Event.

Greek Life will be involved in the clean-up along with other organizations to help make Glassboro beautiful!

Welcome to your new family Spring 09! Congratulations to all organizations  and all your newest additions! You all worked hard during pledging and now its time to celebrate. All organizations have been initiated and all the new members have received their letters! Keep rushing and adding to our greek family!

On Tuesday, April 14th, Alpha Epsilon Phi will be doing a boob painting to raise awareness for our national philanthropy Sharsheret Breast Cancer Survivor and Support Network.Sharsheret is a national not-for-profit organization of cancer survivors dedicated to addressing the unique challenges facing young Jewish women living with breast cancer.” Sharasheret was founded by an AEPhi and still keeps the views of our founders in mind as Sharsheret will not discriminate against people of any background with any type of cancer. The painting will be hung in Progressive Coffee House on High Street in Glassboro, so come check it out and donate to Sharasheret!
